What is Escalol 587

Escalol 587 is a secondary UV-B absorber used in high-SPF formulas. Oil-soluble. Excellent solubiliser and coupler for other sunscreen actives.

U.S. approved use level is up to 5% alone and 3-5% when used in combination with other actives. It is an ester formed by the condensation of a salicylic acid with 2-ethylhexanol.
E.U. approved use level: up to 5.0%.
Use level in combination with other sunscreen actives: 3.0%
The salicylate portion of the molecule absorbs ultraviolet light, protecting skin from the harmful effects of exposure to sunlight. The ethylhexanol portion is a fatty alcohol, adding emollient and oil-like (water resistant) properties. It is a colorless oily liquid with a slight floral odor.
