Chemical properties of titanium

Titanium is a chemical element, chemical symbol Ti and atomic number 22, in the chemical elements in the periodic table is located in the fourth period, the first IVB clan. Transition metal is a silvery white, is characterized by light weight, high strength, with a metallic luster, wet chlorine corrosion resistance. Titanium but cannot be applied to dry chlorine, even the temperature below 0 ℃ dry chlorine gas, also can produce severe chemical reaction, generate titanium tetrachloride, more decomposition generated titanium dichloride, even burning. Only when the water content in chlorine gas is higher than 0.5%, titanium to maintain reliable stability in it.
Titanium is regarded as a kind of rare metal, this is due to the existence of decentralized in nature and difficult to extract. But their relative abundance of (among) all the elements in the tenth. Titanium ores are ilmenite and rutile, widespread in the earth's crust and lithosphere. Titanium also exists in almost all organisms, rock, water and soil. Extracted from the main ore titanium need kroll process or method of hunter. Titanium is one of the most common compounds titanium dioxide, can be used to make white paint. Other compounds include titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4) (for catalyst and used in the manufacture of a smokescreen for air cover) and titanium trichloride (TiCl3) (used in catalytic polypropylene production).
